Support for Those Injured in Nicaraguan Unrest

Nicaragua Unrest

Nicaragua is experiencing a major social crisis that began in April 2018. This resulting unrest has left more than 120 dead, 1000+ injured and dozens of missing persons. The unrest began as students, and the general population, held peaceful protests against the reforms to the Social Security Institute of Nicaragua’s pension system. Though the reforms were pulled back, wider unrest has spread and there have been ongoing clashes resulting in further death and injury.

Private hospitals have opened the doors to provide free care for the wounded, and medical doctors are voluntarily providing free medical care at improvised health posts throughout the country. Maintaining accessible medical care is essential, but resources are thin. There is an urgent need for humanitarian aid via donations to purchase medical supplies in order to continue providing care for the injured.

Those wishing to support efforts to ensure access to care for those caught in the unrest may use this dedicated funding site set up by La Isla Network (LIN)*. LIN’s executive and local colleagues will coordinate effective and equitable distribution of support to the improvised healthcare units and hospitals providing care to all parties. Monthly reports on use of donations will appear in the LIN newsletter and via the Consortium for the Epidemic of Nephropathy in Central America and Mexico (CENCAM) listserv. As two organizations with roots in Nicaragua, and great concern for all people experiencing the unrest there, our organizations look to do what we can for the communities affected by the current unrest.

*LIN is a registered US 501(c)(3), is an audited NGO, and guarantees transparency. LIN is legally able to provide fiscal sponsorship to foreign partners. The funding site has a secure platform for donations for specific causes.
